The Role

This position will serve as the engineering manager of an 8+ engineer team responsible for machinery within an A1B Ford Class Aircraft Carrier Propulsion Plant, requiring knowledge of mechanical and/or electrical engineering principles and applications in addition to project management, leadership, and staff development skills.  Machinery within the department includes turbines, generators, diesel engines, pumps, heat exchangers, motor and valve controllers, and fluid systems in support of the machinery and the plant.  The department is cognizant over the design requirements of the machinery, support of the manufacturer's build and test of the machinery, shipboard troubleshooting and support of the installed equipment aboard a Naval Platform, and lifecycle management of the machinery.  

 

This position will support the current naval carrier fleet, new construction carriers, the vendor supply base, in addition to engineers under your charge to develop, train, and plan both short term and long term tasks, while resolving complex technical issues.  This position will also work with the department manager to establish, support, and enforce cultural, technical, and programmatic standards of the department.

 

Travel to vendor facilities, support of shipboard machinery, and some remote work opportunities will be offered, and times required. 

 

All Newport News Shipbuilding Engineering Managers are required to apply electrical, electronic and/or mechanical principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype electromechanical systems.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design OR Master's Degree and 4 years of relevant experience.


Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

  • Experience with military specifications and standards.
  • Experience using and developing technical manuals.
  • Experience with environmental qualifications (e.g., shock, vibration, electromagnetic interference).
  • Experience with technical writing and written, developed proposals and calculations.
  • Experience as a trainer/teacher with a focus on continuing education.
  • Experience with project management.
  • Experience with staff development and labor resource planning.
  • Experience with one or more of the following technical areas: Mechanical and Material Properties, Rotating Machinery, Fluid Dynamics, Hydraulics, Thermodynamics, Energy, Work, Power, Control Systems, Circuits and Schematics.
