The Role

This manager position requires a highly motivated person to lead a multi-discipline engineering and project management team responsible for overseeing major construction projects within the Plant Infrastructure Projects group. Projects include the design and construction of new or upgrades to existing heavy industrial manufacturing/production facilities, office buildings, roadways, and Piers.  

 

Ideal candidate is a team oriented leader with strong technical and project management skills, is a strong communicator with focus on customer relationships, is adapt at leading a team of diverse knowledge with varying levels of expertise, and possesses strong organizational skills to manage a large volume of projects simultaneously.

 

Job Responsibilities

Implementing capital, expense and direct funded projects that modify, replace and add facilities and equipment necessary to support heavy industrial projects.
Ensuring Safety, Quality, Cost and Schedule of projects as they progress through the estimating, planning, funding, design, bid & award, construction, startup, commissioning and closeout phases.
Managing architecture/engineering firms in developing design criteria and preparing project construction drawings for bidding / regulatory reviews.
Overseeing project construction, inspection and installation progress to ensure conformance to established drawings, specifications, and schedules.
Managing numerous suppliers of engineering, material, construction and support services to ensure the successful implementation of projects and services.
Planning, organizing, recruiting, staffing, training, teambuilding and engaging a diverse workforce charged with accomplishing tactical and strategic business objectives.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design; Master's Degree and 4 years of relevant experience.


Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

Any combination of following qualifications are desired:

 

  • Significant experience in developing design criteria and contract documents; establishing execution strategies; and selecting the appropriate contract/procurement approach for the type of project and desired contract deliverables, especially as it relates to heavy industrial facilities.
  • Possesses comprehensive knowledge of industrial building design and construction.
  • Familiar with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, International Building Code, City of Newport News Code of Ordinances, ADA compliance, and NFPA requirements.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia is a plus
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification.
  • Understanding of company business management principles and have demonstrated the ability to manage and direct the work of others.
