The Role

This leadership position is for a submarine hull structures group in Department E12.  The selected individual will be responsible for leading a highly engaged team of designers and engineers that support In-Service Submarine overhaul efforts as well as Planning Yard ShipAlt development and designs.  The successful candidate will be responsible for the planning, execution, and statusing of various structural tasks while maintaining insight of in-yard overhaul developments in the discipline; timely reaction to all this must meet schedule, cost, and quality objectives.  Candidate must have background in structure discipline and be capable of applying technical expertise to structural design engineering principles to address problems.  Candidate must also be able to communicate effectively and ensure technical requirements in writing are presented clearly to trades.  This individual will interface with internal departments and several external contacts including SUPSHIP and NAVSEA.

 

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design; Master's Degree and 4 years of relevant experience.


Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

The ideal candidate should have previous experience in detailed analysis of submarine structures utilizing both Classical and Finite Element methods of analysis.  Additionally, the candidate should have previous experience in the methodologies to restrain and analyze outfitting items.  The candidate should have specific knowledge of the design of SSN 688 Class, SEAWOLF and VCS submarines and an understanding of how the technical requirements vary between the different classes of ships.  Related engineering section responsibilities include coordinating, assigning and checking work, training and developing engineers, conducting performance reviews and maintain a professional atmosphere within the engineering section.  The ability to simultaneously review, track, guide, and approve multiple tasks is critical to position success.

•    Understanding of SUBSAFE and Re-Entry Control requirements
•    Experience in requirements for fabrication, welding, and inspection of submarine structure
•    Familiarity in 2D drawing development and/or 2D drawing comprehension
•    Knowledge of SAP and SharePoint tools
