The Role
This is position serves as a Manager Engineering 2 on our Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Team. This is a leadership role for our Adv. Manufacturing Design & Deployment Team. Efforts will include part-scanning, design for additive manufacturing, field support services, design drawings, product support, and special projects. This leadership role is a cross-functional role within our product development and engineering team. Roles will include field service support, support for our supply base, design and design concept development, and support for product deployment.
Manages a segment of a program or a function. Responsible for the direct supervision/management of the staff. Responsible for providing objective-oriented direction to subordinates utilizing management guidelines & general policies. Program Manager Responsibilities include: planning and program performance addressing cost, schedule, technical performance, and quality of a work package, subsystem, or related group of work packages on a large system development-type contract or full responsibility for all aspects of program performance on a large delivery order or mid-size technical services-type contract.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and/or design; Master's Degree and 4 years of relevant experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
- Practical experience in project management is preferred.
- An incumbent should be able to communicate effectively and have practical examples of demonstrated engineering leadership.
- Experience in any category of 3D printing and/or 2D/3D CAD & CAM experience
- Self-starter with the ability to lead a team perform work with to support program goals.
- Ability to collaborate with other management, engineers, and other staff to produce AM parts
- Effective time management skills. Must have the ability to manage projects and prioritize work effectively to support end product needs
- Ability to make difficult decisions and execute with consistency and fairness
- Experience leading a team of engineers that advanced manufacturing technologies. Some specialized training will be provided, as needed.
- Experience working effectively on cross-functional teams; specifically experience interfacing engineers, designers, and technicians.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and provide oversight to other technician work functions and engineering support functions.
- Functional knowledge and capability to use MS office tools (e.g., word, excel, etc.).
- Ability to perform and maintain physical activity for extended periods that may include standing and/or physical labor.
- Ability to perform work that may require modified shifts to suit the job operations.
- Ability to perform hands on and conceptual engineering work and leadership for advanced manufacturing deployment functions
- Ability to manage assigned material, perform basis-of-estimates, and demonstrated knowledge of labor resource management functions
- Ability support development of procedures, policies, and safety standards for Advanced Manufacturing technologies
- Other Preferred skillsets include: the ability to check and oversee the work of others, problem solving, self-starters, decision-making, project management, relevant subject matter expertise in an advanced manufacturing field, and/or experience in a shipyard functions and technologies.
- The preferred candidate will have a mechanical or materials engineering background with knowledge of all general engineering principles with proven track record of experience in a leadership role (e.g., project leader, management, current or past supervisory experience, etc.).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and be comfortable presenting to small or larger audiences.
