The Role
The position is responsible for the procurement and project management of cranes. This position will oversee a group of engineers that include project managers, multiple discipline subject matter experts, and planners. Routine interfaces with upper management as it relates to budget, schedule, and cost are expected as well as customer interfaces to determine production needs. The candidate will maintain the long range strategic plan for cranes as well as provide technical oversight when requested.
The ideal candidate must have a comprehensive knowledge of project management processes. They should demonstrate that they can apply project management process and practices to plan, budget, and manage resources. The candidate will maintain department procedures and policies regarding crane procurement and overhaul. The focus will be on execution and completion of projects at cost and on schedule and improving the close out process. They will review proposals, supervise cost analysis and ensure compliance with regulatory, statutory, and stakeholder requirements. They will communicate with various stakeholders, including sponsors, engineers, manufacturers, and tradesmen, to coordinate and facilitate the project goals and objectives. The successful candidate will be familiar with facilities processes as it relates to project management and controls as well as production needs. The candidate will occasionally board cranes and evaluate conditions at heights. The candidate must have or be able to obtain a confidential security clearance in order to access A-90 areas and the ability to climb cranes and access tight spaces.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design; Master's Degree and 4 years of relevant experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
- Project management experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills necessary for interaction with personnel at all levels of the company
- Comprehensive knowledge of engineering/design processes relating to heavy machinery or equipment.
- Understanding of company business management principles and have demonstrated the ability to manage multiple tasks as well as lead and direct the work of others.
- Obtained or pursuing engineering licensure.
