The Role
The Aircraft Carrier Engineering Electrical Department E56 is seeking a front-line supervisor to lead the Lighting Engineering Section responsible for designing and implementing new construction platform electrical systems. This group of engineers and designers is responsible for all interior and exterior lighting systems throughout the ship which include general illumination, Flight Deck Lighting, Visual Landing Aids, and Navigation Lighting systems. Group responsibilities also include 115VAC general purpose receptacle distribution, Vital 115VAC distribution for systems requiring vital redundant power, Advanced Degaussing and 400Hz Power Conversion Systems, and electrical control components supporting deck machinery systems such as Anchor Windlass, Mooring and Warping Capstans, Replenishment-at-Sea Winches, and Boat Davits. This group provides various design products to manufacture, construct, and test platform electrical systems for CVN 78 Class aircraft carriers.
Duties will include:
• Supervising the day to day operations of a team of engineers and designers and managing the team’s workload to ensure safety, quality, cost, and schedule objectives are met
• Developing and training their people to grow their skill sets and expand their capabilities in order to support the collective performance objectives of the Lighting team
• Managing workload and appropriating engineer and designer resources effectively
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design; Master's Degree and 4 years of relevant experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

• Strong technical background in order to have a general understanding of cognizant systems, facilitate technical problem-solving efforts, and represent the Team in high-visibility discussions when necessary

• Demonstrated ability to quickly learn, adapt, and lead in response to emergent issues
The following are desired:
• Familiarity with contract/engineering/construction processes and management. Special emphasis for Waterfront Support, such as Inspection Reports and material procurement, is desired.
• Familiarity with new construction specifications and processes such as drawings, inspection reports, material procurement, etc. is desired.
