This position is currently planned to primarily support the Nimitz Class. However, the former PPPY and RPPY are now the unified Propulsion and Reactor Engineering Planning Yard (PREPY), supporting all nuclear powered aircraft carriers. As such this position's responsibilities may be expected to cross over into Ford Class eventually. This group provides engineering support to the fleet, NAVSEA, TYCOM, NNL/Bettis, BPMI, and the shipyards that support Nimitz and Ford Class carriers.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design; Master's Degree and 4 years of relevant experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
- Experience managing mechanical or chemical engineers and designers executing complex projects in reactor plants.
- Experience with the operation, design, testing, and troubleshooting of fluid systems - liquids, gases, and slurries.
- Knowledge of the design principles, operation, and maintenance of Nimitz Class carrier reactor plants.
- Ability and willingness to support emergent work to sustain the fleet in times of maintenance and in emergencies, to include being always reachable by telephone.
- Experience with ships in RCOH, PIAs, DPIAs, SRAs, WOOs, and at sea.
- Knowledge of Ford Class carrier reactor plants is desirable, and adequate knowledge may substitute for Nimitz Class experience.
- Knowledge of and experience with MIL-Standards, GRPORS, piping, fittings, heat exchangers, fluid flow, heat transfer, welding, pumps, valves, and other components, corrosion, FEA, laboratory testing, and shipboard and waterfront environments.
- Active Navy experience and/or nuclear/propulsion test experience.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Experience with formal and informal communication with the Naval Nuclear Laboratory/Bettis, multiple NAVSEA 08 codes, BPMI, shipyards, and vendors.
- Demonstrated success as a leader, mentor, navigator, etc.
- Demonstrated success as a leader of collaborative, cross-functional efforts to include structural and electrical disciplines, nuclear and non-nuclear trades, construction supervisors, waterfront shops, contracts, provisioning, etc.
- Demonstrated experience applying the Naval Reactors Program Principles.
- Demonstrated history of commitment to continuous improvement.
- Ability to self-initiate assignments, make decisions, and provide recommendations that are critical to achieving project/program long-range goals and objectives.
- History of performing well while largely self-directed.
- Effective at project management and able to manage and prioritize multiple large efforts simultaneously.
- Proficiency evaluating risk to people and systems while properly considering safety, quality, cost, and schedule.
