The Role

The Manager Engineering 3 for Structural Engineering - Future Submarines is a key leadership role within the SSNX, SSNA, and VCS IPMP Design programs at NNS. This position is responsible for overseeing structural engineering R&D, concept, and design efforts for these programs.  The Manager of this area must ensure that all design work meets the highest standards of quality, safety, and Navy technical compliance. The successful candidate will lead a team of Managers and their Structural Engineers, providing guidance, mentorship, and technical expertise to ensure the successful completion of design projects. This role requires a strong technical background in structural engineering, as well as excellent leadership, communication, and project management skills.  Frequent communication with and briefs to senior Navy customers is expected.

 

Key Responsibilities
The Manager Engineering 3 for Structural Engineering will be responsible for the following key tasks within SSNX, SSNA and VCS new design:
•    Leading and growing the structural engineering team, including current Managers and their Engineers, in the development of new complex submarine designs
•    Ensuring the engineering teams have the tools, resources, and training necessary to perform calculations and Finite Element Analyses of submarine structures
•    Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including Designers, Naval Architects, Mechanical Engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure integrated design solutions
•    Coordinating with other NNS departments, such as manufacturing and test engineering, to ensure that design solutions are producible and meet operational requirements
•    Supporting development and implementation of design processes and procedures to ensure compliance with Navy requirements
•    Managing project schedules, budgets, and resources to ensure timely and cost-effective completion of design projects
•    Providing technical guidance and oversight to ensure that design work meets quality and safety standards
•    Working with NNS, Program Office, and Navy leadership to capture new work, in support of NNS new design growth strategies 

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design; Master's Degree and 6 years of relevant experience; PhD and 4 years of relevant experience.


Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

Strong technical background in structural engineering, and experience in submarine design and construction.  Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechancical, Materials, or related Engineering discipline. Strong prior leadership and management experience preferred.
