Job Description

Design, develop, and test operating systems-level software, compilers, and network distribution software. Set operational specifications, and formulate and analyze software requirements. May design embedded systems software.

Newport News Shipbuilding’s Business Transformation and Technology team is seeking to hire a talented and passionate .NET developer who is interested in designing and building information systems to support construction of some of the largest and most complex products in the world. As a software engineer working on our Web Applications team, you will join a team of seasoned developers who are responsible for designing, creating, and testing software that supports the day-to-day operations of 10,000+ NNS employees. You will help support a large number of applications, both legacy and modern, and there will be no shortage of opportunity to learn new systems and technologies. This position will require an individual who is able to learn quickly, is a self-starter, and loves a challenge. Strong communication skills with both technical and nontechnical team members is a must.

The IT Software Engineer 3 will report directly to the IT Manager 3 of the Digital Capabilities Lab (Dogfish Labs). 
As an IT Software Engineer, you will be responsible for creating an environment that enables innovation and creative problem solving across multiple technical disciplines. Responsible for maturing new solutions and transitioning proven solutions into production. Responsible for driving the execution for building out scalable and highly resilient solutions within set budgets and schedules.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of applicable, progressive professional and/or supervisory work experience. Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant experience. Ph.D. and 0 years of experience. 4 years of related exempt experience can be substituted for Bachelor's degree. 8 years of non-related exempt experience can be substituted for Bachelor's degree.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Technical Skills Required
•    Understanding of Agile development principles and practices
•    Experience working in enterprise software application development
•    Strong and demonstrated work experience in Visual Basic, C#, or C++
•    Experience working with .NET and web technologies, including: .NET Core, .NET MVC, and Web APIs
•    Understanding of SQL Server, Entity Framework, and LINQ to SQL
•    Experience and strong understanding of source control management systems(ex: Git)
•    Self-starter who is able to work independently
•    Strong understanding of all phases of the SDLC
•    Experience with automated unit testing and familiarity with TDD practices

Technical Skills Highly Preferred
•    Experience with maintaining and upgrading legacy application technologies, including: WebForms, WinForms, WPF, and Classic ASP
•    Familiar with .NET Core 3.1+
•    Experience working with JavaScript, TypeScript, and modern web frameworks(ex: Blazor, React, Angular, Vue)
•    Experience with DevOps tools and practices, including: build and release pipelines, cloud development, Azure DevOps, containerization, and orchestration
•    Experience with PowerShell or similar scripting languages
