The Role
Maintains smooth operation of local area, world wide and virtual private networks (VPN). Plans, evaluates, and coordinates installation and/or reconfiguration of hardware and software elements of data and/or voice communication network. Maintains technical expertise in all areas of networks and computer hardware and software interconnection and interfacing, such as routers, multiplexers, firewalls, hubs, bridges, gateways, etc. May propose solutions to management to ensure all communications requirements based on future needs and current usage, configuring such solutions to optimize cost savings. Prepares or ensures that appropriate network documentation exists, including operational instructions. Provides regular monitoring and network analysis regarding short- and long-range planning for in-house systems. May coordinate third-party maintenance for network equipment. May design network or portion of network that include selection of hardware and software packages. The successful candidate will be expected to create/drive policy and processes for Network & Telecom evaluations, installs, upgrades and problem resolution. This position will perform work outside of normal business hours and on weekends, and provide rotational on-call support.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 0 years of relevant exempt experience.
One of the following may be used as an equivalent to Bachelor's Degree for Information Technology Related Positions Only:
- NNS Apprentice School graduate
 - Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate
 - Associate's Degree or other formal 2 year program and 2 years of relevant exempt experience or 4 years of relevant non-exempt experience
 - Military Paygrade E-5 or above military experience
 - High School/GED and 4 years combined of Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience or other relevant exempt experience
 - High School/GED and 8 years combined of Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience or other relevant non-exempt experience
 - A relevant professional certification can be substituted for a Bachelor's Degree.
 - Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or other Cisco certifications are a plus.
 
Nice to Have
- Basic understanding and application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in the field of networking administration.
 - BS/BA in Information technology
 - Basic knowledge of firewall administration, application of company security policies and other related disciplines.
 - Prior experience supporting, implementing and/or administering networks using Cisco IOS 15.x and 17.x, TCP/IP networks, routing and switching protocols, DNS, DHCP
 - Experience and demonstrated competency with standard TCP/UDP protocols including HTTP, SSL/TLS, FTP, SSH, SNMP, NTP and SYSLOG
 - Understanding of, and ability to implement, LAN to LAN VPN’s
 - Basic understanding of UNIX and WINDOWS server operating systems
 - Ability to use troubleshooting tools to include WIRESHARK and tcpdump
 - Academic experience with system and network security, authentication and security protocols
 - Ability to communicate orally and written in a professional manner
