The Role
This position provides engineering cognizance and technical support for NNS low voltage electrical and controls systems. The O41 Controls Engineer is responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of the controls systems and software for complex equipment and machinery, utility infrastructure, building operating systems, and submarine delivery/transportation systems.
Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues within assigned system(s)
- Provide technical direction to maintenance personnel and controls technician team to support routine and non-routine equipment repair work
- Maintain configuration control of PLC programs for NNS systems and equipment
- Produce and/or oversee the development of technical documentation that govern the system design, configuration, and operation of NNS controls systems
- Participate in project design and implementation process for system related projects
- Develop a long-range strategic plan for controls improvements for assigned systems and equipment
- Develop and maintain critical system metrics
- Develop and maintain technical training for junior engineers and controls technicians
- Oversee project/system testing to ensure system meets technical requirements and operates at peak performance
Researches, develops, designs, and tests electrical components, equipment, systems, and networks. Designs electrical equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
Degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering or Mechatronics is preferred
Knowledge and experience with:

- PLC programming and logic development (various programming languages)
- Robotics/machine automation
- Human Machine Interfaces (HMI)
- Network Communication Protocols
- Relay interfaces
- Technical aptitude and understanding of both electrical and mechanical components and how they work together as a system
- Development and/or interpretation of electrical, mechanical and controls schematics
