The Role

Develops, analyzes, researches, and designs welding techniques, procedures, and applications. Uses engineering principles to manipulate materials for fabrication and assembly processes. Prepares technical documentation in order to implement waterfront welding processes including specifications, analyses, standards, and restrictions. Creates new or modifies current welding methods, techniques, and procedures in order to substantiate welding theories.

The selected candidate will be an innovative and experienced welding engineer to function as both a lead and consultant role for research and development efforts in the areas of welding, and advanced manufacturing. The candidate will be responsible for the scouting, development, and proof of concept testing of cutting-edge welding technologies, techniques, robotics, materials, and processes essential for the construction of naval vessels.  Ability to obtain a DoD clearance.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience; Master?s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

The ideal candidate will possess the following preferred skills:

 

  • Practical experience in production areas supporting CVNs, VCS or CLB 
  • Robotic and mechanized welding processes and techniques
  • Deep understanding of welding processes (GMAW, FCAW, GTAW, stick, laser, electron beam, etc.), along with underlying metallurgy
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute experimental plans to validate welding processes and parameters in proof of concept manner
  • Collaborate with other engineers and researchers across multiple disciplines (materials science, mechanical engineering, design)
  • Prepare technical reports and present findings to stakeholders
  • Stay up-to-date on emerging welding technologies and their applications
  • Travel is expected. This may include conferences, vendors, briefs to Navy personnel, and shop / ship environment
