Designs, develops, and tests nuclear equipment and systems. Conducts research on new materials of special interest in nuclear reactors. Conducts studies related to the detection and control of radiation and radioactive contaminants. Studies nuclear fuel cycle to define most economical uses of material and safest means of waste products disposal. Other areas of research include radiation transport modeling, statistical analyses and performance metrics. Recommends various technology options or approaches for system, processes, facility or program improvements in terms of safety, performance, efficiency or costs. Must have extensive knowledge in specialized functions such as refueling shipboard and dockside facilities. Applies extensive technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Able to communicate effectively and clearly present technical approaches and findings.
Must be able to develop technical solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity. Work is performed without appreciable direction. Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment. Completed work is reviewed from a relatively long- term perspective, for desired results. Guides the successful completion of major programs and may function in a project leadership role. Erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in failure to achieve major organizational objectives. Represents the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects. Interacts with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations. Minimal supervision required and may assit in orienting, training, assigning and checking work of less experienced employees, as well as being designated as lead for many projects.

Basic Qualifications

9 Years with Bachelors in Science; 7 Years with Masters; 4 Years with PhD.- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Preferred Qualifications

 **Engineers with electrical or mechanical degrees/backgrounds are  preferred for this position.**

Position is within the refueling facilities and shipboard complex group.  Areas of cognizance includes temporary structures / bulkheads, radiological ventillation systems, lighting, fire alarm, security systems and other various mechanical / electrical systems.  Responsibilities also include evaluating and engineering radiological controls for work performed on permanent systems in dockside radiological facilities.  Candidate will be expected to have strong written and verbal communication skills, strength in technical writing, proficiency in troubleshooting of electrical and mechanical systems and root cause analysis.

Requires the ability to physically access a wide variety of work sites, including those aboard ships under various stages of construction or overhaul, including the use of vertical and inclined ladders, and may involve limited kneeling stooping, standing, etc.  Additionally, it is preferred that the candidate presently hold Radiological Training for Nuclear Engineers (RTNE Article 112) and Radiation Worker (Article 106.5a) quafilications.
