The Role

This Job Listing is for recent or upcoming 2024 High School Graduates. Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is offering a $1000 sign-on bonus to Trade Trainee hires. In addition, Newport News Shipbuilding is offering $1,000 in relocation bonus to Trade Trainee new hires that live 50 miles or greater from Newport News, VA. Job seekers who apply until August 1, 2024, are eligible for the sign-on bonus and relocation bonus. As a Sheet Metal Trainee, you will first be qualified through the shipyards state of the art welding school. The Sheet Metal Department is a highly versatile team of craftsmen that are responsible for fabricating, assembling and installing a wide variety of Components on Aircraft Carriers, Submarines and other Surface Ships. These sheet metal components include, but are not limited to ventilation systems, metal joiner bulkheads and framing, furniture, cabinetry, lockers, ladders and handrails, foundations, weapons spaces and wet spaces. As a sheet metal worker, you will perform work governed by detailed technical work documents and procedural guidelines. The tools of the trade include a variety of hand tools and power tools/equipment to include drills, rivet guns, grinders, miter saws, band saws, nibblers, plasma arc cutters, rollers, shears, press brakes and CNC fabricators. The Sheet Metal Department will provide formal and on the job training (basic sheet metal/tack welding) as well as any job specific training requirements. 

 

Newport News Shipbuilding has partnered with the Virginia Ship Repair Association and local Virginia community colleges and maritime training facilities to offer several course-to-hire Marine Trades Training (MTT) programs for individuals interested in learning a trade and working full-time for Newport News Shipbuilding. Courses are offered once a month with 8-10 students per class. The Sheet Metal Trainee program is offered at Tidewater Community College (Portsmouth, VA). This is a 2-week (UNPAID) program (80 hours) 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (Monday thru Friday).

Must Have

Candidates must be 18 years of age or older and legally eligible to work in the U.S.

 

Candidates must be able to:

  • Climb ladders and work at extreme heights.
  • Work in small, tight, or confined spaces.
  • Kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis.
  • Lift heavy objects weighing 40 lbs. or more
  • Work while repeatedly reaching overhead.
  • Work indoors or outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.
  • Work in areas with radiation.
  • Take and pass a respirator fit test.
  • Work assigned shift as production needs.
  • Take and pass a Physical Agility Test.
  • Take and pass the 2 Week Sheet Metal Trainee Program
