The Role

Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, is offering a $1500 sign-on bonus to experienced TRADE new hires. In addition, NNS is offering $1000 in relocation to experienced TRADE new hires that live 50 miles or greater from Newport News, VA. As an Experienced Sheet Metal Worker (Fabrication) you will plan, lay out, fabricate, assemble, install and repair sheet metal parts, equipment and products utilizing knowledge of working characteristics of metallic materials, machining and layout techniques, using hand tools, power tools, machines and equipment. You will perform work governed by detailed technical work documents and procedural guidelines to fabricate sheet metal components for Aircraft Carriers, Submarines and other Surface Ships. These sheet metal components include, but are not limited to ventilation systems, metal joiner bulkheads and framing, furniture, cabinetry, lockers, ladders and handrails, foundations, and weapons components. The tools of the trade include a variety of hand tools and power tools/equipment to include drills, rivet guns, grinders, miter saws, band saws, nibblers, plasma arc cutters, rollers, shears, press brakes and CNC fabricators.

Select gauge and type of sheet metal, such as CRES, steel or aluminum according to drawing material specifications.
Lay out and mark dimensions and reference lines on material using scribers, dividers, squares and rulers, applying knowledge of shop mathematics and layout techniques to develop and trace patterns of product or parts or using templates.
Set up and operate fabricating machines such as shears, brakes, presses, forming rolls and routers to cut, bend, block and form or straighten materials.
Trim, file, grind, deburr, buff and smooth surfaces using hand tools, power tools and equipment.
Install assemblies in supportive framework according to drawings, using hand tools, power tools and lifting and handling devices.
Inspect assemblies and installation for conformance to specifications.
Utilize SMAW, GMAW, and GTAW welding techniques to weld components and assemblies.
Repair and maintain sheet metal products.
Operate computer aided CNC equipment to facilitate production.

Must Have

Candidates must able to work at extreme heights or small confined spaces.

Must be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb.

Must be able to lift 40 lbs and must take and pass a respirator fit test.

Must be able to work indoors/outdoors year round in all weather conditions.

Must be able to work assigned shift as production needs.

Must be able to pass Physical Agility Test.

Qualified candidates must have at least one (1) of the two (2) below in order to be considered for this position:

(A) Two (2) or more years experience in Sheetmetal/Fabrication, Carpentry, Construction, Mechanical/Automotive Repair, Welding/Hull Tech, or similar experience.
(B) Successfully completed a technical/vocational program in HVAC, Welding, Carpentry, Construction or a similar program and/or have completed related military training
