The Role

Performs a variety of duties in the mechanical and mobile crane areas, including but not limited to research, troubleshooting, documentation updates, parts acquisition, and direct onsite support of mechanics and electricians, with the end goal of providing the highest up time for mobile crane assets. The Technician will work closely with engineers, mechanics, and electricians and work from equipment manuals, schematics, engineering drawings, and written or verbal instructions to repair mobile cranes.

Specific to this position:

-    Reports to the O48 Crane Engineering North Yard Group. 
-    Works with staff Subject Matter Expert (SME) to maintain, repair and troubleshoot mobile cranes (informal 2 person team).
-    Provides field technical support to mechanics and electricians to assist them in the repair of equipment.
-    Troubleshoots all systems generally found on heavy equipment, including, but not limited to hydraulic systems, electrical systems, control systems, brakes, and hoisting systems. Ability to read and understand technical manuals and schematics is essential.
-    Updates and creates documentation related to heavy equipment, such as preventative maintenance documents and load test procedures.
-    Identifies and orders repair parts and works with contractors to repair/rebuild/fabricate parts which are no longer available or have long lead times.
-    Works closely with contractors to repair equipment.

 

Performs a variety of duties in the electronic, mechanical, electromechanical, or optical areas. Constructs, troubleshoots, calibrates, adjusts, tests, and maintains equipment, components, devices, or systems. Works from engineering drawings and written or verbal instructions. Operates related equipment; conducts tests and reports data in prescribed format. Performs calibration and alignment checks; makes adjustments, modifications, and replacements as directed; prepares prescribed compounds and solutions. Exclude technicians working in Production or Quality Assurance.

Must Have

Associate's Degree and 1 years of relevant experience

One of the following may be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree to meet minimum qualifications:

  • NNS Apprentice School graduate
  • Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate
  • High School/GED and 2 years of related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience
  • High School/GED and 4 years of non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience

Nice to Have

  • Previous mobile crane experience preferred.
  • Previous heavy machinery experience preferred with focus on hydraulics and/or hoisting systems.
  • Completion of some formal heavy equipment manufacturer training classes preferred such as Grove, Link-Belt, Caterpillar, etc.
