The Role
Newport News Shipbuilding (a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries) partners with the Department of Defense to offer CNC Machinist positions to graduates of the Workshops for Warriors program. This role is ideal for individuals with foundational machining knowledge who are eager to expand their technical expertise in a high‑performance environment.
CNC Machinists are critical to our shipbuilding mission, contributing directly to the production of high‑quality components for the Navy’s fleet. You will receive on‑the‑job training, mentorship from experienced professionals, and opportunities for career growth within a world‑class shipyard.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain a variety of manual and CNC equipment, including lathes, mills, vertical machining centers, and horizontal boring mills
- Assist in machine setup, tool changes, and program loading to ensure efficient production runs
- Perform in‑process quality inspections, verifying dimensions against engineering drawings and specifications
- Troubleshoot machining issues, make adjustments, and document corrective actions
- Follow all safety, quality, and documentation procedures to meet NNS standards
Qualifications & Requirements
- Successful completion of the Workshops for Warriors CNC Machining 1 program (640 hours/16 weeks) in San Diego, CA
- Pass a pre‑employment hair‑follicle drug screen, physical abilities test, and background investigation
- Detail‑oriented, reliable, and capable of working both independently and as part of a team
All new hires who currently reside more than 50 miles from NNS and relocate to the area will receive a $5,000.00 relocation allowance upon their start date.
