The Role
Objective
The Skillbridge intern will train as an Environmental Health and Safety Professional within Ingalls Shipbuilding, reporting to a designated HII Supervisor, with the goal of learning Environmental Health and Safety basics and principles. The intern will be assigned special projects as needed.
Desired End State (3-4 month target)
- At the end of four months, the intern will be able to use predetermined methods, operations, setups and prescribed specifications to support the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) department in Occupational Health and Safety, Compliance and Documentation, Communication and Collaboration and Technical and Analytical assessments.
- The intern will develop a good understanding of the inspection and regulatory process. This includes:
- Hazard identification and risk assessment: Learning how to spot unsafe conditions and assess employee risk levels.
- Incident/Injury investigation: Understanding how accidents and near misses are documented and analyzed.
- Safety audits and inspections: Participating in or observing workplace safety inspections and compliance checks.
- Training and policy development: Assisting with safety training sessions or updating safety manuals.
- Working with cross-functional teams: Learning to communicate safety rules, regulations and requirements to all personnel.
- Promoting safety culture: Helping organize toolbox talks, awareness campaigns, or sustainability events.
- Emergency response drills: Participating in fire, spill, or evacuation drills.
- Sampling and monitoring: Taking noise, heat or atmospheric sample and analyzing results.
- Using EH&S software: Learning digital tools for incident reporting, audits or compliance tracking.
- Data analysis: Reviewing injury trends or metrics to identify areas of improvement.
- Ingalls Shipbuilding will benefit from the military background of the Skillbridge intern and considers the Skillbridge internship an overall positive experience.
Assumptions/Restrictions
- If candidate is selected and approved, Skillbridge Intern can travel in conjunction with this internship; HII Ingall’s will fund all travel costs.
- Skillbridge Intern will possess at minimum an Active confidential Security Clearance.
- Skillbridge Intern will be available during core hours for critical meetings and training.

- Week 3: Introduction to Programs, Departments, Contractors and Vendors
Phase 2 – EHS Program/Area Specific Field Work
- Week 4: LHA Program Inspections
- Week 5: DDG Program Inspections
- Week 6: LPD Program Inspections
- Week 7: Shop Inspections
- Week 8: Safety Audits
- Week 9: Industrial Hygiene sampling/monitoring
Phase 3 – EHS Administrative Functions, Customer Feedback
- Week 10: Training and development
- Week 11: Metrics Review
- Week 12: Feedback & Coaching
- Week 13: Next Steps
Must Have
Candidate must be transitioning active duty military personnel within their final 12 months of active-duty service.
