We’re building tomorrow’s fleet today
With more than 11,000 employees, HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division is the largest manufacturing employer in Mississippi and a major contributor to the economic growth of Alabama. For nearly 85 years, we’ve designed, built and maintained amphibious ships, destroyers, and cutters for the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. The largest supplier of U.S. Navy surface combatants, we’re simultaneously building four classes of ships and have pioneered the development and production of technologically advanced, highly capable ships for the surface Navy fleet for decades. The Role
Designs and defines system architecture for new or existing complex computer systems. Determines systems specifications, input/output processes, and working parameters for hardware/software compatibility and maintenance of system security. Coordinates design of subsystems and integration of total system. Identifies, analyzes, and resolves program support deficiencies. Develops and recommends corrective actions. May provide technical guidance for database administrators and software developers.
We are seeking a highly experienced Systems Architect (Level 4) with specialized expertise in AI systems architecture, enterprise scale systems engineering, and cloud architecture. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, integrating, and optimizing advanced system solutions that incorporate modern AI technologies and cloud native frameworks. This role will collaborate closely with cross functional engineering, cybersecurity, program leadership, and IT operations teams to establish robust, scalable, and secure end to end architectures.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience.
Technical Responsibilities
• Architect scalable, distributed system solutions integrating AI/ML models, data pipelines, and real time analytics components.
• Define cloud native architectures using AWS, Azure, GovCloud, or private cloud platforms, including network topology, compute orchestration, identity management, and zero trust patterns.
• Own systems engineering activities including requirements decomposition, interface definition, MBSE, and integration strategy development.
• Develop technical architecture artifacts (logical/physical diagrams, data flows, sequence diagrams, security models, deployment architectures).
• Architect and evaluate AI/ML platforms, MLOps pipelines, model lifecycle workflows, and inference at edge or inference at scale patterns.
• Lead cloud modernization initiatives: containerization, Kubernetes orchestration, service mesh integration, CI/CD automation, and infrastructure as code.
• Integrate cybersecurity architecture into system design using secure by design principles and compliance frameworks.
• Drive data layer architecture including distributed data systems, real time data streams, and high performance data integration patterns.
• Provide technical leadership during architecture reviews, trade studies, and engineering milestones.
Core Technical Qualifications
• Expert level proficiency in enterprise scale systems architecture and systems engineering.
• Hands on experience designing and deploying AI enabled systems, including model training, data ingestion, transformation, and operationalization.
• Extensive cloud architecture experience (AWS/Azure) including compute, storage, orchestration, identity, network segmentation, and security controls.
• Strong background in MBSE, SysML, digital engineering workflows, and architecture modeling tools (Cameo, Rhapsody, Sparx EA).
• Proficiency with containerization and orchestration platforms (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift).
• Broad knowledge of secure architecture patterns, cybersecurity engineering, and system hardening.
• Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, and cloud native services.
Advanced / Preferred Technical Expertise
• Modern data meshing architectures, data fusion frameworks, and distributed data fabric design.
• AI/ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, ONNX, model optimization, and hardware acceleration concepts.
• Event driven systems, microservices patterns, and asynchronous messaging frameworks.
• Experience with DoD or other regulated, mission critical system environments.
• Relevant technical certifications such as AWS/Azure Architect, TOGAF, Kubernetes, or INCOSE.
• Demonstrated experience designing and implementing AI or ML-enabled systems (architecture, data pipelines, MLOps, deployment).
• Extensive hands-on experience with cloud architecture and engineering (Azure, AWS, or equivalent).
• Strong understanding of systems engineering processes (MBSE, requirements management, interface control, integration).
• Proficiency with architecture modeling tools (Cameo, Rhapsody, Sparx EA, or comparable).
• Experience with containerization/orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift).
• Knowledge of cybersecurity frameworks, secure design practices, and compliance requirements.
• Excellent communication and technical documentation skills.
Nice to Have
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience supporting DoD, government, shipbuilding, or highly regulated environments. Certifications such as AWS/Azure Architect, TOGAF, INCOSE CSEP/ASEP, or equivalent.
